Meet the Kripps/Battista Family

n9Meet the Kripps/Battista Family

Beth, Jason, Madilyn and Keaton

Beth, Jason, Madilyn (4), and Keaton (2)  live in Verona with their dog Diego.  Beth works part-time as a preschool teacher and Jason as an elevator constructor.  This year was an exciting year for their family, they moved into their brand new home in April!

Beth joined WSSC when she was 3, worked as a lifeguard, water ballet director, and assistant manager, and now belongs with her own family!  Beth is also in her 2nd year as a board member at the pool.

When they are not at the pool, the Battista/Kripps family loves watching the Packers, Badgers, and Blackhawks.  During the winter months, you will find them at many of the Badger hockey games.

Meet the Ketarkus Family

Meet the Ketarkus Family
Becky and Joe + 8ketarkus
Hi everyone!  We’re the Ketarkus Family and we’ve been swimming with the Dolphins for a VERY long time now!  Becky, also known as ‘MOM!’, has been a member at Westside since 1985 when her parents brought her to the pool for the first time.
She married Joe, and in 2004, Becky’s parents generously transferred their membership to our growing family so that the Ketarkus Kids could enjoy the pool too.  Little did Westside know there would end up being so many Ketarki!  T
here are currently eight children in our family:  Ally (11), Cam (10), Brady (9), AJ (9), Jax (7), Juliana (6), Sofia (5) and Tess (2).  Last week, we very happily announced that Westside will get to enjoy yet another Ketarkus next year as we spend the “off” season working on bring home another swimmer.  Bowen, age 3, will be joining our family from China sometime soon!

Tie Dye Sunday 2-4 pm

Tie Dye Sunday 2-4 pm

Hello WSSC families!

As promised, here is the time for our tie-dye event on Sunday. The time will be from 2-4 pm !

Bring something to dye and the pool will provide the supplies. The dye will adhere best to fabric that has been washed but not exposed to fabric softener. We hope to see some artistic creations!!! Tie dye can be a messy process, so participants should wear clothes they don’t mind getting a bit of extra color on. We could also use extra newspaper to put down. A huge thanks to Kelli Chesnik who will be our guest tie-dyer!!!

Meet the Thain/Levinson Family

Meet the Thain/Levinson Family

 Greg, Mimi and JuliaThain

Greg and Mimi joined WSSC in 2008, after they finally figured out where all of their neighbors were disappearing to every Summer.  Their ten year old daughter Julia is a huge WSSC fan.  Julia learned to swim at the pool, and after some gentle encouragement from the guards, decided that swim team might be fun too.

Now the All-City swim meet is the highlight of her summer. She also loves being in the annual WSSC Water Ballet show, because “you can wear as much makeup as you want”. However, she is now starting to wonder about Jon’s stories about the alligators who live in the pool’s pump.

Mimi volunteers as one of the parent reps for the swim team, helping out our hard-working coaches with some of the details of running the swim team.

Greg volunteers as a USA Swimming-trained official at the swim meets, though he has certainly never DQ’d your swimmer.

In her spare time, Mimi enjoys cooking, and once spent a week training at the CIA (the other one). She works as a Pharmacist in the Drug Information center at Meriter Hospital, and Greg works at the UW – Madison’s Computer Sciences department, but he probably can’t fix your printer.

Greg, Mimi and Julia live in the Westmoreland neighborhood with their cat Scrappy and their dog Nemo, one of whom would very much like to go for a swim right now.

Swim with an Olympian

Swim with an Olympian

Exciting News!!  Swim with an Olympian is official!  Olympic Gold Medalist Carly Piper is coming to West Side!

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece,  Piper won a gold medal in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay with Natalie Coughlin, Kaitlin Sandeno and Dana Vollmer that set the world record in the event.  She is a UW-Madison graduate and and together with UW Swim Team Alum Sierra Lewis, they will be hosting a clinic at West Side!

The date has been set for Monday July 8th from 7-9 pm.  The evening will include a 1.5 hour clinic followed by a motivational talk by Carly and an opportunity for photos and autographs.  (Don’t worry, Carly and Sierra will make sure everyone that would like a picture or autograph gets one even if we run over!)

Carly has offered to give West Side a discounted rate for this clinic and the West Side board has generously agreed to subsidize a large part of the event.  The cost will be just $10 per swimmer, which will all go toward Carly and Sierra’s fee.

Carly and Sierra will work with your swimmer on the skills they need work on, including starts and turns.  This is a very exciting opportunity and West Side is thrilled to be able to offer this to our swimmers.

To sign up for this event:   We’ve left an envelope with a sign up  sheet at the desk.  Just complete the fields and include payment.  If you use cash, it would help us if you put a sticky note on the money with your name  If you write a check, please include “Olympian” in the memo line. Please sign up by July 1 so we can get an accurate head count to Carly and Sierra.

Because of this special event, stroke clinic will be cancelled for the evening.

Meet the Giroux’s

giroux
Dave, Anne, Sophie, Lily and Amanda

Meet the Giroux family, a Westside Swim Club family for over 13 years. Dave, Anne, Lily, Sophie and Amanda relish their time and activities at the pool over the summer. “It’s like summer camp,” said Anne. “We don’t see most of our pool people over the fall and winter, and so it’s so fun to reconnect over the summer. We cherish our “summer friends.”

Lily and Amanda are veterans of our water ballet program, and Sophie is an accomplished diver on the dive team. Even Anne has dipped her toe into the adult water ballet routine. Dave likes to heckle or take photos from the side.

When not at the pool, Dave works at the UW System as the Communications Director, and Anne works on Lily’s Fund for Epilepsy Research, a nonprofit they started in 2007 to raise awareness of epilepsy and raise money for research at UW-Madison. Lily’s Fund is an all-volunteer group that has raised more than $350,000 through events such as Lily’s Luau in January. Many of us at Westside have been involved with Lily’s Luau or Lily’s Lemonade Stands to help the Girouxs spread the word. But they can always use more volunteers. “We’re truly blessed to have so many people roll up their sleeves to help in so many ways,” says Anne. “We couldn’t do it without you.”

To Learn more about Lily’s Fund go towww.lilysfund.org. West Side will be having a Lemonade Stand to support epilepsy research at our swim/dive team parent’s meeting on Sunday, June 9th at 6:30 pm.  Come thirsty and learn more about a great cause!
