Swim with an Olympian at West Side

We have exciting news for swim team members!   Olympic Gold Medalist Carly Piper is coming to West Side!  At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece,  Piper won a gold medal in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay with Natalie Coughlin, Kaitlin Sandeno and DanaVollmer that set the world record in the event.  She is a UW-Madison graduate and and will be hosting a clinic at West Side

The date has been set for Thursday, June 25th from 7-9 pm.  The evening will include a 1.5 hour clinic followed by a motivational talk by Carly, and an opportunity for photos and autographs.

Due to a generous sponsor, the cost will be just $10 per swimmer, which will all go toward Carly’s fee,  Similar clinics typically cost 25-50 dollars per swimmer.

Carly will work with your swimmer on the skills they need work on, including starts and turns.  This is a very exciting opportunity and West Side is thrilled to be able to offer this to our swimmers.

To sign up for this event:   We’ve left an envelope with a sign up sheet at the desk.  Just complete the fields and include payment.  If you use cash, it would help us if you put a sticky note on the money with your name  If you write a check, please include “Olympian” in the memo line. Please sign up by July 1 so we can get an accurate head count!

Thanks-

Mimi and Kate

Swim team update 6/7

Hello Swim Team Families!

Thanks to everyone who made it to the parent meeting tonight! It was great to see some new faces and plenty of returning ones! If you did not make it to the meeting, we talked about what to bring to practice and meets, volunteering, and several special events going on during the season. If you have lingering questions, please don’t hesitate to email me or talk to Taylor or I at the pool.
Things to remember this week:

Swim Team Parent Meeting – TyeDye and more!

Hello everyone:

Just a quick reminder about Sunday’s events;

Tie dye at 3 pm. Bring something to tie dye- we’ll provide all the supplies needed to create a masterpiece!
Pot luck: 4:30 ish. Bring a dish to share and re-connect with your pool friends. Meet some new friends while you are at it! Susie from Simply Swimming will be on hand to meet your start of season swimming needs.
Parent meeting at 6! We will introduce the coaches and parent reps and go over important information for the season. We will be including a breakdown of swim meets and how to read heat sheets for new families after the main meeting. Bring your questions!

Please note, the weather forecast is looking a little unsettled for tomorrow— so we might need to reschedule the tie dye and potluck.

The parent meeting WILL be held, rain or shine at 6 pm.

We will send out an email tomorrow around noon if we decide to cancel the other events- don’t worry, we will reschedule them for a later date.

Also, it’s hard to believe, but the first swim meet of the 2015 season is in ONE WEEK!

Take a few minutes to sign your swimmers up and sign yourself up for a volunteer slot.

We need at least one parent per family to volunteer at each home meet. West Side is known for our well run meets so let’s keep that tradition going! Follow this link to get started…

See you at the pool!

Welcome to Swim Season 2015!

Night practices will begin this week! They will be held Tuesday and Thursday nights for the next two weeks (June 2, 4, 9, and 11). 5-6 PM is 10 and under practice. 6-7 PM is 11 and up practice. See you then!

On Friday, June 12, we will have delayed morning practice so everyone gets a chance to sleep in on their first official day of summer! From 9-10 AM, 13 and ups practice. 10-11 AM is 9/10s and 11/12s. 11-11:30 is 8 and unders. We will be practicing starts and turns and going over things swimmers need to know at meets so everyone will be ready for our first home meet of the season against Ridgewood on June 13!

WSSC Charitable Giving

Things get pretty crazy during the summer months.  So we though now would be a good time to provide some info on the two fundraisers that West Side and all the other pools in the All City League participate in every summer.

Please take a moment to read about how, working together, we can make a real difference in the lives of people in our community.

KIDS SWIMMING FOR KIDS
Make a Splash!  Make a Pledge! Make a Difference!

Kids Swimming for Kids (KSK)was started by the Shelley Glover Foundation as a way for All-City swimmers to help raise money to support scholarships for children in the Madison area to learn how to swim.  The Shelley Glover Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the memory of Shelley, a gifted athlete and member of the Shorewood Swim Team.  Each year, through the commitment of parents, coaches, and swimmers, kids swim laps  so that we can open the doors of the swim community to a more diverse group of children and ultimately give the gift of the life-long skill of learning to swim.    Please join us this year as we swim to raise funds to support a special lesson program for children through the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County.

A session of swimming lessons for one child costs $45.  Boys and girls swim suits cost $30 and $20 and a pair of goggles is $8.   West Side has set a goal to sponsor 3 children this summer for 4 sessions of lessons.  You can make a pledge now to help other kids enjoy the fun of swimming.

ALL CITY FOOD DRIVE
The All City Swim and Dive league has a wonderful tradition of helping others in our community through their annual food drive. Last year, Westside raised money and collected canned food for the Kids Cafe at the Boys and Girls Club on Allied Drive on the southwest side of Madison.  Kids Cafe programs provide free meals and snacks to at-risk children through a variety of community locations that provide after school programs.  In addition to providing meals to kids, all Kids Cafe programs offer a safe place where children can participate in nutrition education and academic and recreational activities. This is a wonderful opportunity to help others at a time when the shelves of food pantries are low and kids are not receiving a hot lunch at school.  The Food Drive is a membership wide effort!
Start setting your spare change aside so that you can help us help others this summer! Every dollar collected buys 3 meals!  This is also a friendly competition among the other pools in the All City League so let’s show them what West Side is made of!
